Organic Chemistry · Chapter 6: Aldehydes & Ketones I

Question

Semicarbazide formula is (____).

Answer

Semicarbazide formula is (H2N–NH–C(O)NH2).
Semicarbazide formula is (H 2 N–NH–C(O)NH 2 ).
Note: Certain primary amine derivatives condense with aldehydes and ketones to form products that are less hydrolytically unstable than ordinary imines. Among these are hydroxylamine; hydrazine, H2NNH2, and its derivatives, such as 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine; and semicarbazide.
Note: Upon exposure to an amine, aldehydes and ketones initially form hemiaminals, the nitrogen analogs of hemiacetals. In a subsequent, slower step, hemiaminals of primary amines lose water to form a carbon–nitrogen double bond. This function is called an imine (an older name is Schiff* base) and is the nitrogen analog of a carbonyl group.
