Note: Just because bond dipoles are present, does not mean that the molecule as a whole will also have a dipole. At times, the dipole moments can cancel themselves out like seen below with CCl4. CCl4 (carbon tetrachloride) has four polar C–Cl bonds, but because the molecular geometry of carbon tetrachloride is tetrahedral, the four bond dipoles point to the vertices of the tetrahedron and, therefore, cancel each other out, resulting in a nonpolar compound
