For example, if a study is done to see how likely a person will be to cry by watching a series of sad videos on youtube, a moderating variable could be the gender of the person being tested. So perhaps one gender is more likely to cry compared to the other gender so the strength of the relation between crying and watching sad videos will change.
Moderating variables can include all sorts of things like location, gender, race, religion, etc.
