Note: Both of these properties make carbonyls excellent electrophiles. The planar stereochemistry of a carbonyl leaves open space above and below, reducing steric hindrance and making it more receptive to attack. The partial positive charge on the carbonyl carbon makes it prone to nucleophilic attack. The partial negative charge on the oxygen is easily protonated.
