To act as nucleophiles, alcohols and amines usually require a ____ solvent.

Answer

To act as nucleophiles, alcohols and amines usually require a basic or neutral solvent.
To act as nucleophiles, alcohols and amines usually require a basic or neutral solvent.
Note: Nucleophilic reactions often compete or coexist with acid base reactions. For example, RO· is a very good nucleophile that will attack the carbonyl carbon of aldehydes and ketones. However, if there is an acidic proton available, such as the one on a carboxylic acid, the RO- will be protonated to form ROH, a less potent nucleophile. It might even be protonated to ROH2+, which is not nucleophilic at all.
